CHARACTERS

The SABRE series involves a vast range of characters from many different backgrounds. A few are listed below in no particular order.

These characters originate from three continents: Arcaya, dominated by the Kingdom of Cape Cadbey, protected by the Royal Skuas; Scavana, ruled over by the Kingdom of Merithia; and Sundrith, where several tribes and authorities have merged to form Sundrithia. CLICK HERE to see the World Map.

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR: Yes, AI has been used to generate the below images. However, I would like to state that AI has NOT been used in ANY of my writing, hence several editions, a few typos and the fact I hired the fantastic Fae Monarch @cosmicmorale to edit my work. AI has been used on this occasion due to the sheer amount of characters listed. If you're still reading this then fair play, thank you for your attention, and enjoy!

WARNING: THE BELOW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

Tarazi

middle aged mixed race bald man in a ragged grey long sleeved shirt contemplating in a got

Tarazi was a wealthy Sundrithian lord, until he was taken captive during a Royal Skua slave raid. He built his empire from nothing, only to watch it disappear overnight.

Freed by Father Featherstone, Tarazi must decide whether to assist his rescuers, in bringing about an end to Skua tyranny, or return home to whatever remains.

Here, he is pictured after being rescued, during his first night in Bestla Manor, a cruel reminder of the wealth he once owned.

Will he fight and serve a greater purpose? Or betray those who have given him a new chance? And by choosing to fight, is he really freed?

Abbey Shelton

Abbey Shelton.jpg

Abbey is thrust into the Royal Skua Cadets by her disowning mother, as soon as they will take her. Aged 12, Abbey is forced to witness the horrors of war, leaving her broken...

But Abbey contains much spirit, allowing the Sabres to rebuild her: stronger. Their perilous journey takes her across the known world and beyond.

Abbey is pictured in Part III. Now 21, her story sees her venture off alone in search of the truth. What has become of the Sabres? Are they still alive? What will she do once she learns their fate? And what adventures await her in the capital and beyond?

Lady Heidi Bestla

Heidi Bestla was just 4 years old when her home was attacked, resulting in her parents' fate.

Despite being 13, she is ruthlessly determined to seek revenge and punish those she deems responsible. Nicknamed 'The Lady of the Lake', Heidi visits her mother's grave each morning, down by Bestla Manor's lake, and plans her next steps.

Father Featherstone is more than pleased to assist her, by utilising her inherited wealth, estate and title in the name of justice.

But revenge is a costly aim, especially for one so young...

Earl Didrik Olsson

stern old white man with a grey beard and long grey hair. He is surrounded by a dark green

Eight years have passed under the eyes of the Merithian Lynx. Yet, Didrik Olsson, Earl of House Olsson and Forssa Province, seems no closer to accepting his new grandson, Todd Witherow.

That may be about to change... Having come of age, Todd must best Mount Eldberg and the blackened plains of Svart Eld, if he is to prove himself to Didrik and Merithia.

Will Todd succeed, so he may finally pave his own destiny? And will Didrik support him? Or will the walls of House Olsson come crashing down?

Sir Alan Witherow

Alan Witherow.png

Sir Alan Witherow is the father of our main protagonist, Todd.

A former vice admiral of the Royal Skuas, and a knight of the realm,  Alan has dedicated everything to the crown: his blood, his council, his wife, and his eldest son.

Yet, when his eldest son is killed in action, 10-year-old Todd is expected to serve.

Alan's anticipated response sees him sentenced to death. But all is not lost. There are those who swore an oath to protect him and the realm. These oaths must be honoured amidst a coming revolution. But will he live to see his son return home?

Father Featherstone

Father Featherstone.jpg

Though Father Featherstone’s presence in SABRE Part II was limited, he quickly became a fan favourite for his mad ways, humour and fierce traits.

Despite his age and self-built prosthetic leg, Featherstone plays a major role in SABRE Part III, by coordinating and continuing the fight back home.

Will he succeed in ending the Royal Skuas and Grenyard’s reign of tyranny? Or will he merely dent Skua dominance at a great cost?

Halim
'A Ray of Jua'

elderly bald black man with spectacles. Wearing a shirt, a vest jacket and a suit jacket.

As a Ray of Jua, Halim's knowledge and beliefs are welcomed by Father Featherstone, who rescues him and many others from slavery.

Halim believes he was saved by Father Featherstone for a reason - so that he may serve his Gods, Jua and Nyota, by helping to protect Sundrith and his people from Skua tyranny.

The others, however, are not so easily convinced. And when a Skua spy is suspected, trust is brought into question.

Will Halim succeed in rallying his people? Or will his faith be crushed beneath the rubble of Featherstone's war.

Moira

Halistra, Arcaya's most northern settlement, is inhabited by Cadbey's most resilient souls. Moira is no exception.

Landlady of the Pathfinder Inn, she is a trusted friend of Father Featherstone. Both rely on each other  to survive Halistra's arctic conditions and its neighbouring Void.

In the aftermath of the revolution, Moira follows Featherstone and assists him in ending Commander Grenyard's reign. She also gains a new inn, The Jackdaw, which she uses to gather intel.

But her resilience is truly tested when the inn receives vicious guests...

Sameer

Indian man in black shirt, black vest jacket, black trousers, black trench coat, black glo

Like many Royal Skuas, Sameer was forced to serve in place of his father - a Sundrithian who left Sundrith for the shores of Arcaya, where he chose to become a marine.

But Commander Grenyard’s tyranny has led Sameer to witness slave raids and attacks on his ancestral homeland.

Dominated by fear, Sameer prays for an end to his people's suffering. Until he is approached by Father Featherstone in the heat of battle.

He seizes the opportunity to help end Grenyard’s evil. But can he be trusted? Or will he betray the enemies of the state he has chosen to assist?

Eldrid is a veteran - a former Royal Skua -  found roaming the streets of Cape Cadbey. Forgotten, rotting, destitute... or is he?

Todd Witherow first encounters Eldrid after fleeing Cadbey Academy. But he has often seen the beggar, wandering past his home, as if he is keeping an eye on the boy and his father, Sir Alan Witherow.

What is Eldrid's true purpose? How is he able to assist Todd in his darkest hour? And what role will he play in trying to prevent the coming revolution?

Captain Zacharias 'Rias' Lyman

Rias (1).jpg

Many rumours circulate this killer, who is known for his brutal ways, crooked top hat and soulless, arctic eyes.

Just a boy, Rias was found washed ashore, cast from the Aeternum Ocean, with no name or heritage. Adopted by the church, he was later exiled for blasphemy. The Royal Skuas were more then pleased to raise him, accepting him into their ranks.

Rias was moulded in hell. He went on to become Commander Grenyard's most feared captain and the leader of Claymore Squadron. But there is more to Rias's story then meets the eye.

In the far reaches, amongst distant shores, Rias is summoned back to his creator, where he discovers his true demonical purpose...

What is Rias's purpose, what secrets do his eyes possess, and is he the spawn of evil, or merely a pawn?

Tsar Alva Olander of Artrik

Attractive woman with a black bun and curling hair. She has a pale white face, rigid cheek

Tsar Alva Olander of Artrik has ruled Merithia for fourteen years. Young, cunning, beautiful and charming, she has maintained a loyal following.

Her throne is situated in Varlden Halsstad, the city in the throat of the world, where the Gulf of Artarer meets the heart of Scavana.

Under Alva's rule, Merithia has conquered the entire southern continent of Scavana - a jagged stretch of land three times the size of Cadbey’s eight provinces.

The Royal Skuas are the only reason she has failed to claim territory in Arcaya, for her forces no longer bolster an invasion fleet, forcing Alva to focus her intentions elsewhere, despite regular altercations at sea between merchant ships, the navy and the Skuas. This will be her downfall, unless she can be convinced to acknowledge a new demonic threat that faces her empire. Will she listen or be the final Tsar?

Niamh is a fiery Royal Skua veteran - a former member of Sabre Squadron. Her daughter, Vanessa 'Ness' Griffiths, now serves in her place, as dictated in Winsford's Law.

Niamh has been through hell and back. But when she answers the call to rescue Sir Alan Witherow, and save the realm, her endurance will be tested to its limit.

Accompanied by fellow veterans Donald 'Don' Simpson and Laith Kader, Niamh embarks on a perilous journey across Arcaya and beyond, hoping to be reunited with her daughter.

Will they succeed and thrive or will they be forced to make the ultimate sacrifice?

Todd Witherow

ten year old boy, wearing a tricorn hat and a long sleeved shirt. He is looking out to sea

Though the SABRE series contains many characters and story lines, 10-year-old Todd Witherow is our main protagonist.

Todd is lively, assertive, brave and proud of his family's naval history. He idolises his brother, Captain Thomas Witherow, as well as his father - knight of the realm, former vice admiral and advisor to the king's council - Sir Alan Witherow. He envies them and dreams of becoming a Royal Skua...

This dream soon becomes a nightmare. Todd's family is torn apart, forcing him to serve. Everything he believed to be true is a lie, his heroes have become villains, and evil has infected the unit.

However, a greater destiny awaits Todd... if he can uncover his true identity. Assisted by the Sabres, Todd must survive multiple trials, so he can take revenge on those who have wronged him, before they can inflict annihilation.

Vice Admiral Oswald Leonard

A 60 year old man with streams of white hair and a gushing beard . Sunspots dot his crease

Oswald vanishes during a Skua raid enabling Commander Grenyard, known for his cruelty, to seize control of the Royal Skua's Mothership.

The position of vice admiral was entrusted to Oswald by Sir Alan Witherow, who commends him for his wit, charisma, courage and bravery in battle.

Thus, foul play is suspected, but the truth behind Oswald's disappearance remains a mystery.

Only the Sabres can uncover the truth, but it may take them to the edge of the abyss, forcing them to sacrifice everything for the good of the realm. Will they succeed in finding the vice admiral? And,  with their steel, can he put an end to Grenyard's tyranny? Or will an even greater threat emerge?

Lord Wilfred Whitmore

Whitmore is the lord of Arca Province, its capital, Red Rock Citadel, and its infamous mining colonies.

Within his foul grasp is the hostile plain of Terra Province, where pockets of a new resource, named hycinthium-lapis, are being discovered daily - in Dead Man's Chasm. Only the imprisoned or damned are sent to toil in such dangerous conditions.

The king rejects a resettlement programme, aimed at relocating his people to mine this charged ore, prompting Whitmore to action his bloody revolution.

Who will side with the gluttonous lord? Who will fall? And will his revolution succeed or pave the way for a greater evil? â€‹â€‹â€‹

Malkoveleth

Malkoveleth.jpg

Little is known about the ancient Veleths. Some say they are dictators of fate -  malevolent beings that manipulate men to restore balance in the world. Dark entities that have poisoned kingdoms and ended reigns.

Malkoveleth is said to dwell in the far reaches, beyond the Southern Archipelagos of Sundrith. But many mysteries surround this unchartered region, where travellers regularly go missing and strange sightings go unexplained.

If Malkoveleth does exist, what plans does she have in motion? And is she a benevolent entity or simply a meddling hag branded a witch?

Eleanor 'Spike' Archer

Rias.png

Spike joined the Royal Skuas after fleeing her abusive childhood. Ominous, quick and satanically ruthless - she embodies the unit.

But if Spike is to lead the Sabres in protecting the realm, she must change her vicious ways.

This sketch, by an unnamed sailor, shows Spike in typical Skua attire. Her bicorn hat mirrors a harrowing beak, and its edges resemble frayed wings. The tattoo of a sea beast twists around the back of her head and neck. A bandana, as black as the darkest night, masks her face, and the nails protruding from her trench coat have earned her the nickname, Spike.

Despite their perilous situation, will Spike become the captain she has longed to be, or will her bloodlust result in Sabre's doom? â€‹

Curtis

A black cumbersome hog in the hull of a galleon snooping around chicken cages..jpg

When young Todd and Abbey first board HMS Oborus AKA The Mothership, they are left mesmerised by its scale and wonder. In addition, they are introduced to Curtis.

Curtis is an 'avid sailor'. Unlike the other animals on board, he is not for eating. Todd's mentor, Robert Simpson, is unsure who the pig belonged to. "Someone fond of pigs I imagine," he says. Either way, Curtis is left to his own devices.

All becomes clear at a later stage. Despite playing a minute role in Sabre Part I, Curtis became a fan favourite, prior to Todd's journey taking a dark turn. Fortunately, Curtis is a survivor and his journey is not limited to The Mothership...

Admiral Alfred Sartorius

Untitled design (2).png

Under this admiral's watch, the Royal Skua's reputation has been poisoned.

The Skuas have protected the Kingdom of Cape Cadbey from Merithian for 200 years. Yet, many wish to see the unit disbanded for its growing power and brutality.

Without Sartorius the Royal Skuas may become unbound... unless he has already lost control. The admiral has always seemed unhinged. Most of him remains lost at sea. But in recent months his health has declined rapidly, mentally and physically.

Now, a revolution looms and Vice Admiral Oswald Leonard has vanished, allowing Commander Grenyard to take control of The Mothership. In his withered state, Sartorius must decide how to appease or confront opposing powers. Where do his loyalties lie, if not only unto himself?

Lana Thornstein

Lana's father, Quincent 'Quincy' Thornstein, believes she is one of the toughest sailors ever to grace the Aeternum Ocean.

Following her mother's death, Quincy took Lana with him on his cartography voyages, despite offering safe passage to dangerous folk. Together, they have survived countless encounters with mercenaries, pirates, Skuas and Merithian sea dogs. At times, Lana’s brutality has appalled him.

Spike and Lana repel each other when they first meet. But the Sabre's will need Quincy and Lana's help if they are to find the missing vice admiral. And Spike soon warms to the Merithian-Sundrithian, who shares her fierce traits.

But these cartographers do not wish to share their peril. And they see a prize in Spike's most treasured possession, HMS Sabre. As Merithians, will they betray the Sabres? Or will their journey bring them together?
